WORKING IN QATAR

Qatar is a small and very wealthy country. Its wealth comes mostly from natural gas and oil. Its capital, Doha, enjoys modern infrastructure and excellent facilities. The culture remains conservative, for example, in personal conduct, alcohol and dress.

The culture is Arabic and Islamic, in a modern setting. In the region as a whole, the wealthier that countries are in terms of their natural resources, the more conservative they tend to be.

This is another country where it pays to immerse yourself in the culture and people, so that you can enjoy the way of life. The mistake is to try to live separately.

People are hospitable and friendly, yet the country has an independent streak. It sometimes falls out with its bigger neighbours. This may cause temporary inconvenience, say for travel in the region, but it has never come close to affecting personal safety and daily life.

Pay tends to be good, salaries are tax-free and many of the newer schools have excellent facilities.

It is common to hear teachers speaking highly of the lifestyle and the students, while having some reservations about management or parents. Sometimes, this is unfair on local owners and it points to that global tendency for misunderstandings between the culture of education and the culture of business. Experienced teachers take this in their stride.

What is sustainable for Qatar for the foreseeable future, is its wealth. Most of the modern UK, US and IB curriculum schools offer great opportunities for young and for experienced teachers. Some of the mid-fee schools have a family-run quality to them which also works brilliantly.

A residency permit is needed and your employer (sponsor) becomes responsible for your conduct during your stay. You cannot change job and transfer sponsor without their approval. Like most of the countries in the GCC region, you will need to undergo medical checks.
