WORKING IN EGYPT

Egypt has a rich history that makes it one of the most attractive countries to visit in the world. City life is crowded and often chaotic. Education is a life force for Egyptians.

The culture is Arabic and Islamic. There is mostly a liberal religious tolerance and pro-Western feeling among the people you meet. The people are easy to get to know. This is a country where you should look to immerse yourself into local life and that includes spending time in the local coffee shops, rather than Starbucks.

Most teachers work in Cairo or Alexandria, while there are also universities and International schools in other regions, including upper Egypt.

Cairo is the main centre with plenty of International schools at premium fee and mid-to-high fee levels. Alexandria also has a mature schools market. Pay reflects the market segment you choose. You have to allow for taxes but the cost of living is very low.

There are usually currency restrictions in place that mean you need to be clear about the currency you are paid in and what the consequences are for taking any money out of the country later. Rules and expectations change, so it is a good idea to get your school to explain how things work with them and to consult others living and working inside Egypt.

Enjoy yourself during your time in Egypt and don’t forget to visit the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World!
