CAREERS AND DEVELOPMENT

There are few teachers when asked about their career would say that they don’t want to progress. After all it’s sort of the right thing to do isn’t it? If you are a newly qualified teacher with 30 + years ahead of you then you’re unlikely to be planning to stay in the same job in the same place until you retire.

The promotional route

The promotional route would probably lead you along the path towards the pursuit of a leadership position. Depending upon factors like the size and type of your school, it could look something like this:

Teacher —> Head of Department / Year —> Head of School —> Vice Principal —> Principal

The professional growth route

Another option of course is to become a teacher and to remain a teacher. There are a huge number of opportunities to progress if this is your choice. For instance, if your goal is to secure a teaching post in a premium International school in a highly desired location then you’ll need more than the bare minimum in terms of qualifications.

These schools are able to take their pick from the top talent around, so you’ll need to show you have a lot to offer to land one of these highly sought after jobs.
