WORKING IN OMAN

Oman is usually regarded as the regions’ most friendly and easy-going country to live in and to work in.

The culture is Arabic, Islamic and pro-Western. It is significantly less conservative than its neighbours. It also avoids the sense of bling about nearby Dubai – half an hour’s flight away. The people are easy to get to know. The expat population does not out-number the national population as it does in its neighbour, the UAE. This is a country where you want to taste local life.

International schools are much fewer in number than in Saudi, Qatar and the UAE. There are one or two very strong, premium fee schools which match the rest of the world for standards and management practices. There is the usual mixture of fee-level and management behaviours and customs in the rest of the market.

Pay reflects the market segment you have selected and there is a good social life in this tolerant and liberal setting.

A visa, with residency permit, is needed and your employer (sponsor) should have that in place quickly. The sponsor becomes responsible for your conduct during your stay. You cannot change job and transfer sponsor without their approval.

You must tour Oman during your time here. In the north are the fjords of Musandam, where your boat trip will take you racing local dolphins and meandering past tiny traditional communities on the stark hillsides.

Inland are the mountains and the wadis. To the south is Salalah which still gets a summer blast of refreshing cooler air, that attracts visitors from every part of the region.
