WORKING IN JORDAN

Jordan has diversity as well as sophistication. The historical sites are beautiful. People value education, friendship and debate.

The culture of Jordan is Arabic, Islamic, Mediterranean and pro-Western. It is a liberal-minded, tolerant nation and the people are easy to get to know. Many are well-educated and choose education as a career. Jordanian teachers sustain many other countries’ school systems.

Much of Jordanian education favours the US model, although the educators in the country are sophisticated and many understand every nuance of UK and European approaches as well as US standards.

Teacher salary packages outside the top International schools in Amman will not be as good as they are in parts of the Gulf Region. There are tax considerations too, but these factors are offset by a cost-of-living index that strongly favours the expat. Check the currency you will be paid in and check the currency transfer rules in play at the time of your employment.

Jordan is a terrific place to tour and hike. It has a cooler, Mediterranean north which is infused with the history of  the Roman expansion. It has a mountainous and temperate centre which houses the extraordinary city of Petra and the legacy of older civilisations.

To the south, you cross the beautiful desert including Wadi Rum and drive down to Aqaba and the Red Sea. This is like having three countries and multiple tourist traps in a single accessible place.

Jordanians are very friendly and you will certainly get to know them. Expect to meet people who have excellent English as well as Arabic and maybe French. Expect ‘give and take’ and warmth. And, in our experience, expect some great arguments, too. Always friendly and always lively.
